MixMash is a fairly unique product, it caters for the ever growing group of VJs. Having never really used video in my road show before I was very eager to try it out.

MixMash Music Videos

Previously when a fellow DJ told me he used a projector I always guessed that it would be used to project Winamp style visualizations on to a screen just like the way most clubs do. I have on many occasions used a projector projecting onto a screen behind me, and I must admit it looks fantastic the visualizations just make the whole rig look stunning. The screen is also handy at hiding all of those messy cables that so many of us are guilty of.

I have never even considered playing anything other than visualizations thru the projector. Admittedly I did once project pictures of the crowd on to the screen but this is where the technical trickery stopped.

More and more companies (Pioneer, Technics and Numark to name a few) are bringing out these so called products for VJs ( Visual Jockeys). But what do you play on these glorified DVD players ?? You could play video loops and suchlike but in that case why not just use a pc + Winamp.

Well now it seems there is a very simple solution and it comes in the form of MixMash, MixMash is the VJs equivalent to MasterMix or DMC. They operate a subscription service, you can buy a whole years subscription for £385. Alternatively you can buy single DVDs for around £35 each. This seems like a lot of money to pay out for Music Videos but I can assure you it’s worth it.

Every DVD is crammed full of the latest music videos there are roughly 15 videos on each DVD. 30 Videos in total as you get 2 discs with each pack. That is just over £1 per video, that is superb value for money. The videos are all chart related too there is no unusual artists that no one has heard of.

NO. ARTIST TITLE
01 Natalie Imbruglia Shivers
02 Tiffany Evans Let Me Be Your Angel
03 Vs If You Leave Me Now
04 Estelle Go Gone
05 Rachel Stevens Negotiate With Love

This is taken from the March 2005 edition of the Pop MixMash, this furthers my point that these artists are mainstream artists and hence are suitable for playing in a disco.

Quality
To me the quality of the videos is everything if the music videos look rubbish on anything bigger than a 5inch screen then what’s the point in using them. MixMash videos however are of the highest quality; I just could not manage to get the videos to look rubbish no matter what I played them on. I tried a 14inch TV, a 7inch LCD, a 21inch LCD, a 47inch Plasma, a cheap sub £1000 projector and an expensive projector. The videos looked good regardless of size, even on the cheap projector. Which has the worlds worst optics and displays most things as pixely. These videos are absolutely stunning the colours are bright and vibrant.

Sound wise these DVDs are impressive too, MixMash hasn’t compromised on any aspect of these DVDs everything is of the highest quality. The sound was even good enough quality to send straight through my PA without even having to touch the EQ controls.

The MixMash collection spans from the 70s until the present day so you can be sure that you will have the right video whatever the occasion. They even have Christmas catered for with classics from Wham!, Band Aid and more…

Live Usage
The real test was using them in a live environment, its all well and good if the DVDs work well at home but do they actually work well in a live environment and what does the customer think?

I decided to test the DVDs at a children’s party as children are much more forgiving if something goes wrong, but they are also the most picky customer if they don’t like what’s playing… they wont dance.

What did they think? The children absolutely loved the idea of being able to actually watch the music as well as hear it. The music videos were on all night constantly, even the parents were impressed.

I had no problems with the DVDs what so ever no jumping or stubborn ones that wouldn’t play. The parents loved it and I have had about 7 bookings from it already from people asking me to “bring the music videos”.

I am regretting not having used DVDs before as it brings an extra form of interaction between the DJ and partiers. I am very much hoping that VJing will take off as it is a great way to keep the crowd entertained.

Negatives
There are no negatives for this product I don’t think there is anything that will suit your needs better. One slight annoyance is that sometimes there can be a video on more than one DVD meaning that if you for instance bought Pop and Urban you would have a duplicate of one video. But at just over £1 per video who cares. I have hundreds of duplicates within my CD collection, it happens with just about every compilation system out there.

Overall
So the overall verdict? If you have a projector buy MixMash DVDs and make your road show a stunning one. If you don’t have a projector… buy one … and then buy some MixMash DVDs. I can guarantee that you will not regret it.
