The Martin 812 is part of the successful range of martin's, it is famed for its reliability and resilience to fatal damage, it is a superb light with only a few drawbacks.
The Martin 812 accepts a 150W discharge lamp, which produces a brilliant white light. This has its own pro's and con's. The brilliant white light when compared to any other type of bulb s excellent, but if you don’t compare it to any other light at the same time it looks no different really, also the bulb has a 6000 hour lamp life. The problem with discharge bulbs is that they cost £70 each. The mirror on the martin 812 is very responsive, it will move almost instantly from one point to another.
An ingenious idea built into that 812 allows you to have a choice between selecting a whole colour or in-between two colours or doing the same with the gobo wheel.
This is operated like so:
Below 50% the slider scrolls through the colours but above 50% it switches between each colour, the gobo wheel does this as well.
Also both wheels have blackout on them allowing for an immediate gobo after black out or and immediate colour after black out.
The 812 tends to stay very cool even after long operation.
The draw back with the martin 812 is the stepper motor, when moving slowly the mirror will jitter, this happens less on newer lights due to new stepper motor technology.
Over all the Martin Roboscan 812 is a very reliable good light with few drawbacks.
