This is a high power lightweight amplifier made by Thomann, there are 3 models available, each weigh only 9.5kg and are all 1u high. The model on test was the D2800. First impressions : The amplifier was packaged in rather thin cardboard, although inside this there was a fair amount of further protection. The Amplifier ships with a European plug so a standard UK 13A plug to IEC lead is required. The amplifier looks well built but with a slight "mass produced" look too.
Performance: The amp is only 1u but is quite deep so needs a fair sized rack to sit in, most of the larger amp racks by 5 star will accommodate the 500mm deep amps without too much trouble. The Fan is relatively quiet although I think the noise would be quite noticeable with a rack full of these together. The amp has been tested powering , Martin Audio F12's, The Low Mid section of Turbosound TQ445's and The Turbosound THL828 subs. The amplifier produces a very clean sound on mid/top duties and seems very strong. Unfortunately its performance was less impressive at driving subs at 4ohms. It appeared to struggle with continuous LF reproduction at anything above -12dB at 4ohms A High pass filter of 35Hz was in place, all controlled with a BSS Omnidrive. The amplifier shut down when driving to -6dB at 2 ohms (with 2 THL828's connected in parallel to a channel). The amplifier runs very hot at 4ohms with a less than difficult output to deal with. Overall: Great performance for mid/top work at 8 and 4ohms. Not so good when really pushed hard and reproducing low frequencies. This amp that was on test will be working its way back to Thomann shortly. Conclusion + • Not over priced for this type of amp • 1u, 9kg, up to 3350watts per channel • 3 year warranty from Thomann. • Nice clean sound for Mid/Top/vocal PA work - • Not good at reproducing low frequencies at low impedances • Runs quite warm when pushed hard • 50cm deep limits the type of rack it can sit in. • Not rider friendly
