Production lighting designers Bryan Leitch & Nick Whitehouse of Visual Light Design utilized 60 SGM fixtures for the 2007 BBC Electric Proms season at London's Roundhouse.

The high profile 5 night event featured a wide range of some of the most acclaimed popular music of the moment including The Kaiser Chiefs, Paul McCartney, Bloc Party, Mark Ronson and others, complete with nightly highlights broadcast on the BBC.

All lighting equipment was supplied by Siyan, who use SGM moving lights for the majority of their major tours and events, and have an extensive stock of SGM moving lights and LED fixtures. These were all supplied by SGM’s UK distributor, Lightfactor.

Keen to integrate their rig into the fabulous natural architecture of the building, the design incorporated two semi-circular trusses running around the rear of the stage area, one measuring 20 metres and one 30 metres, trimmed at 10 and 8 metres respectively.

Onto these was rigged 20 SGM Giotto Spot 400 CMY and 17 Giotto 400 Wash CMY fixtures, providing a basic structural backbone to the lighting rig.

The fixtures were used for powerful back lighting, beam and – in the case of the Spots - gobo effects. "We like the SGMs for all sorts of reasons" elucidates Nick Whitehouse, "They are a powerful, versatile, reliable moving light and helped provide the dynamics we needed for a visually demanding event". Whitehouse also comments that the Giotto 400s offer a substantial amount of light output for their expedient size.

He went on to explain that one of their main aesthetic challenges in terms of lighting was to ensure that it satisfied the needs of both the nightly live audience and the broadcasters. Achieving a successful result here is a fine art of balance and finesse.

In addition to those over the stage, SGM Giotto Spot 400 CMYs were also used as part of the audience lighting. Seventeen were rigged to the venue’s high catwalks, and proved plenty powerful enough to punch through from there. These were joined at high altitude by SGM PALCO LED flood lights attached under the balcony rails.

In addition to the SGMs, there was a large generic rig plus other moving lights including some purloined from the house rig for the occasion.

Lighting for the event was run by Siyan's team of Lighting Directors - Dom Smith, Ewan McRobb and Stu Farrell - in consultation with the band's own LD's using two Avolites Diamond 4 consoles. Lighting crew chief was Iestyn Thomas. It’s the second year that Siyan has supplied lighting for the event which has been a massive success, instantly gaining a very high profile.
