A quick guide with diagrams showing how to wire audio cables for many different applications, including XLR, jack and RCA leads.
Shown below are different configurations for both balanced and unbalanced connections. All connections are shown wired with balanced shielded twisted pair audio cable, although for unbalanced connections it is fine to use single core shielded.
Remember that these leads do not use transformers or any active circuitry, and therefore a balanced to unbalanced connection loses all the benefits of a balanced line. This type of connection is not ideal for long cable runs, and should be avoided where possible.
